WHAT IS LUNG CANCER?

Lung cancer is a group of diseases resulting from the malignantgrowth of cells of the respiratory tract, including lung tissue, and one of the most common cancers worldwide. Lung cancer usually originates from epithelial cells, and may lead to metastasis andinfiltration into other tissues of the body. Excluded from lung cancerfor solid tumors that metastasize to the lung tumors from other parts of the body.
The most common cause of lung cancer is smoking, with 95% of patients with lung cancer and former smokers. In nonsmokers, theoccurrence of lung cancer is the result of a combination of geneticfactors.
It has been established that snuff and possibly air pollution, constitute a causal factor of lung cancer. Smokers have a risk of10 to 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer (according to thenumber of cigarettes smoked per day) than nonsmokers.
Lung cancer is classified into two main types depending on the size and appearance of the malignant cells: the small cell lung cancer (small cell) and non-small cell (non-small). This distinctiondetermines treatment and so, while the former is usually treated with chemotherapy and radiation, the latter tends to be well bysurgery, 4 láser5 and, in selected cases, photodynamic therapy.
